Today was the day I discovered how many of my mutuals despise Knives Out. I don’t understand how that’s possible. It’s like hating pastries.

I've noticed hostility towards movies that are overtly structured, that are unashamed of their movie-ness and play with tropes/techniques. Not sure if its a result of homogenous blockbusters or the CinemaSins Effect, but some people seem to be suspicious of anything with style.

I wonder if it has something to do with how gaming culture has warped people’s views of what cinema is. They act like the purpose of cinema is to deliver plot information and congratulate the viewer on knowing trivia and noticing things.

I feel like blaming the rise of "people have have a sense of accomplishment though recognizing lore and pendantic trivia" on video games is fairly myopic. Not that their aren't games that totally trade in that sort of stuff (1/2)

(ex. Half-Life was considered one of the smartest written games out there because "deep lore" when in retrospect the lore is probably the weakest aspect of it) I feel like LOST and whole JJ Abrams mystery box craze was a turning point for these kind of audience reactions (2/3)

He said "something to do with," not "the sole cause of it is." It's a tweet, not a deep exploration of these issues. But as someone who has spent a lot of time in gaming culture and observing film YouTube etc., I think gaming culture is a relevant factor in the mix.

Wasn't trying to say that MZS was "blaming it on games" (sorry if I came off as such) There's a fair argument re: games as a whole defining themselves as "challenges to be won" (for better or worse) training audiences to treat movies as "things to win" in a very reductive way

I guess where I find myself confused is how a audiences decided that "winning the movie like it's a game" meant "strip mining incidental flavor text in search of some kind of ground truth while ignoring and/or outright rejecting the actual themes and ideas of the story"
