What kind of construction work is done until midnight, though? It's such a deliberate decision to have him working a contract job until midnight on his birthday. Why do we have those details? It's just bizarre.

Maybe, but it could also just come out of the desire to quickly establish for players a bit of context about him without awkward additional scenes. I don’t think most players are gonna ask questions like “Why are he and Tommy having this conversation now?”
