I think what Noah is reacting against here, more than anything else, is the reduction of popular culture to exact mirrors of reality and commentaries upon it, and at the same time, the conversion of criticism into political editorials.

That’s all well and good but it’s also perfectly valid to criticize Nomadland for adapting a book that is unflinching about Amazon’s cruelty into one that liberals can watch and feel comforted by its cozy depictions of Amazon & the way its central character chooses her lifestyle.

I do fully agree that some film criticism in general these days is very reductive, looking only at a work’s perceived “values” and dismissing the rest. I just also think this particular convo about Nomadland is vital.

To be clear I don’t want one or the other, I want film crit in which these things all coexist as part of the same conversation. It’s frustrating to me when I feel a critic habitually ignores aesthetic beauty to only engage with a film’s values. The opposite is also frustrating.
