Absolutely. The gorgeous framing of shots and camera movements, the "lighting" (with no lighting engine), and man, the dialogue that's just so evocative and satisfying. Real worldbuilding on multiple levels.

A fantastic example of the difference between technical fidelity and craft. Taking a limited engine and making it punch way above its weight class. PS1 games rarely hold up visually, but Vagrant Story still looks great even today.

I think you can draw a clear line from this game and Vanillaware’s work. Some of the same people (like Hitoshi Sakimoto) worked with them on their projects. Vanillaware has the same close obsession to story and detail for characterization (though in different ways)
