If you've never read it, the Skyward Sword announcement is as good a reason as any to read Tevis Thompson's indelible essay Saving Zelda, originally published following the Wii release of SS. It reads a bit differently, perhaps, in the wake of BotW. http://tevisthompson.com/saving-zelda/

"Congratulations, Mr. Aonuma – you never have. Instead, you’ve taken the teeth out of a hardcore series. There’s no real danger now, no risk, nothing to lose. You’ve redefined game designers as the ultimate helicopter parents." ~Yikes~

I won't say it's not an opinion you're allowed to have but it's not a very thoughtful one, especially when the grounds for this seems to be "the last 8 or so entries in this series aren't exactly like the first one and therefore it's lost its way" -- No, it's just not your way.

I'm not sure what your argument is. Of course Tevis is arguing his point of view here. It's one many people including myself happened to share about how incredibly dull and predictable Zelda had become by then, but IMO most great criticism is rooted in personal subjectivity.

      1) The "games need to be harder" crowd are gatekeepers who are uninterested in sharing gaming so much as cultivating a sense of elitism. 2) Imagine you got into mad max 1 and declared the sequels aren't 'real' mad max because they all take place in a wasteland instead of a city

It's not just about difficulty though, it's about a lifeless lock-and-key design that reduces the world from a place of wonder to one of rigid function. Your second argument IMO is not analogous to this at all.

" The point is to grow, to overcome, to in some way actually become better." better than what? than who? At what?
