I agree, though existential Bergman doesn't see any mundane alternative to a transcendental support that brings meaning to existence and I've always have a problem with his unilateral dichotomies, I prefer him as a psychologist (Summer Interlude, Persona) than as a philosopher

I prefer his psychological intensity as well, but the philosophical angle in The Virgin Spring and Winter Light is extremely moving. Btw, I'm in the minority, but outside of the scene where the protag talks to her ballet instructor, Summer Interlude was weak and manipulative.
