Ever since Gone Home, I feel like we've seen an increase in games that to use letters & other written documents more prominently as a means of storytelling, and while some games are pretty successful, other games don't seem to understand what made them so effective in Gone Home:

Definitely! Tone modulation rather than just loading up on exposition. Replaying New Vegas, there's some similar techniques in there at times but GH is a masterclass.
