Ever since Gone Home, I feel like we've seen an increase in games that to use letters & other written documents more prominently as a means of storytelling, and while some games are pretty successful, other games don't seem to understand what made them so effective in Gone Home:

Whether it was Janice's friend sending her letters about "Ranger Rick" or Terence's editor at the audio tech magazine or whoever, all those documents had real personality, and that made them feel so much more authentic. It made all the difference.
