To answer the open questions in your article - knowing how to recommend and analyze games to an audience in terms they understand and appreciate is part of being a skilled reviewer and writer. It's making it about the audience rather than about you.
I'm not saying that reviews like that are BETTER. I'm saying they're more useful to the audience. It's MUCH more challenging to write your own creative truth and expect an audience to find it and come to it. Typically you have to spend an entire career cultivating that.

Your piece resonated. The hardest part of the videos I make is that even when expressing my own views, I feel like I'm being too conciliatory. That I'm self-censoring, and that it's a learned reflex. I guess all we can do is keep chipping away at expressing ourselves better. ^^
It's definitely challenging territory to navigate. I'm aware too of ways in which I soften things at times because I feel like many people view uncompromising criticism as something alienating and upsetting rather than something stimulating and valuable. It's a constant process.
