A rephrased first part can be true while not negating the validity of your points - many of the sex scenes in films/series are unnecessary. Whether or not they COULD contribute to plot/tone/etc. doesn't mean they DO. Many are gratuitous + can distract/disengage viewers.

Oh, I'm not saying there aren't bad/wholly gratuitious sex scenes, of course there are, but that seems to me like an entirely different viewpoint from the one being voiced here.
