i wrote this almost exactly a year ago in response to reactions to reviews of death stranding. now reactions to cp2077 reviews are making it extremely relevant again. some people seem to want game reviews to be one thing. i want them to be something else.https://medium.com/@carolynpetit/ruthless-individuality-criticisms-past-and-hopefully-its-future-d1ffbf3bb2c8 …

a lot of ppl are deeply invested in maintaining their own perspective on games as "objective" by saying it's rooted in "technical analysis," as if this isn't also a kind of subjective opinion about what really matters in games and what doesn't. there is no "objective" evaluation.pic.twitter.com/4n6sOpbMLI

But it's appealing to maintain this hierarchy, because doing so suggests that there are populations who games should rightfully cater to (the "objective" ones) & populations they should rightly ignore. It allows for the canonization of some perspectives & the dismissal of others.

Anyway it's not as if reviews that are more heavily focused on "technical analysis" don't exist. Why do we need every review to approach every game from the same perspective, weighing the same things as equally important to the overall experience? Where's the value in that?
