I imagine to the people that treat video game consumption as core to their identity, an actual review, as one would review any form of art, can be seen as a critique of them and their character. Like you said, they just want someone to tell them they- I mean "their" game is good.

I think a lot of this has to do with timing. If criticism is meant to do those things (and I agree that it should) why put it out three days before the game releases? Coming out pre-release is always gonna make it seem like buying advice on some level.

There are generally 2 reasons I go to reviews: 1. I'm already interested and I want to know if the game is wrecked with bugs. Mainstream reviews suite this purpose. 2. I'm interested in someone else's thoughts and a more culturally focused analysis. They're both valid reviews.

And I seek out the latter much more often because it's more intellectually stimulating, which is partially why I enjoy games as an artistic medium.

I forget to look at scores, If I'm looking at a review i'm reading for the things that would bug me about a game and things that would make me want to buy it. A lot of beloved games out there are just boring to me.

I agree. Academic Criticism around other media has a whole discourse that evaluates how a text interacts with culture, as opposed to how many stars we would give Michelangelo’s David.

I think games media is torn between a mass market that wants consumer reviews and a media that lacks the sophistication to discuss media as a whole and confuses noting objectionable content for media criticism. One side wants to not think about Cyberpunk as anything other than
