There's some chatter today about younger game critics who haven't played a lot of the games (or even the consoles) that those of us who are...a bit older...have played. That's great! Every field needs new blood, and I hope future generations of game writers shake things up! (1/4)

The one word of caution I have for writers new to the field is rooted in something that's all too common in writing about film by younger people: the tendency to treat a perspective about an older film as a fresh take that nobody might have expressed before, when it's usually not

Just don't treat the history of games crit as basically nonexistent prior to your arrival. Do a bit of reading and research before you publish your take on Super Mario Bros. or DOOM to see if there isn't already a history of discussion you can draw on around that same perspective
