There's something undeniably therapeutic about being able to lose yourself in a piece of media for a few hours. Not just for the raw escapist value (although, sure, in 2020 that can't hurt) but also just to be fully engaged with A Thing, to have it give you thoughts & feelings.

Yeah, it's surprisingly easy to fill one's free time consuming the media equivalent of junk food. Consuming real stuff actually has an effort attached, and I think that's maybe the hurdle? It's hard to A) find the time and B) the mental energy to commit to a thing for that long.

I've found that headphones help? They're sort of the auditory equivalent to a dark room with no other distractions. I can put in some wireless headphones and listen very intently to something.
