Yup, and it's only in that era of games. Move into the PS2 era and beyond and it just doesn't exist any more.

I can't really tell if it's just the weight of nostalgia for a different time in life? Or if it's a nostalgia for a form of art that just doesn't exist in the same way anymore? Like, is that weight personal or artistic? But it may not be possible to separate the two.

I love that aspect of many early 3D games! It might be a slight stretch to say that was intentional "atmosphere," but in any case I prefer that feeling to the vast majority of game spaces today. A simple, desolate beauty that shows only what's needed.
