IMO there's a frisson of spooky desolation to a lot of 3D 32- and 64-bit games (including Ocarina of Time) that's not entirely different on an emotional, textural level from hearing "Africa" by Toto in an empty shopping mall

Yup, and it's only in that era of games. Move into the PS2 era and beyond and it just doesn't exist any more.

I can't really tell if it's just the weight of nostalgia for a different time in life? Or if it's a nostalgia for a form of art that just doesn't exist in the same way anymore? Like, is that weight personal or artistic? But it may not be possible to separate the two.

Yes! There has to be a word for that empty shopping mall/ imperfect simulation of a world feeling

I think its the floors/ground. Theyre too empty. I get this same feeling watching old 3d cartoons like Jimmy Neutron

Too empty? ...Or just the right empty? 👌

I love that aspect of many early 3D games! It might be a slight stretch to say that was intentional "atmosphere," but in any case I prefer that feeling to the vast majority of game spaces today. A simple, desolate beauty that shows only what's needed.
