My personal manifesto on what I want from criticism's future, with a focus on games, though of course not limited to them:https://medium.com/@carolynpetit/ruthless-individuality-criticisms-past-and-hopefully-its-future-d1ffbf3bb2c8 …

It's similar with discussions, ppl need to re learn that a dialogue is not about winning but arguing a better point with actual facts and arguments and well wrought opinions. And it's okay to say: we won't reach the same page here, we have to agree to disagree. And walk away.

I honestly think that would require a complete reinvention of the internet. Which should totally happen. At this point it's just a bunch of trolls charging up true believers into fucking up the real world.

The answer would take at least a week. Don't you know reviewers who don't give 10s or 5-star ratings or make the slightest criticism are nothing but jellus haterz? They're taking out their anger with something/one else on the poor innocent victim? Oh, never mind.

I swear to god, fandoms is the worst thing that ever happened to art. It used to be that people liked something and that was that. Now it's like every fucking little thing is a whole god damn religion and if you worship it wrong you will be punished for heresy.

I....am very guilty in this area.

Scoring over 80% is definitely a pass in every exam / course I've taken. They doxxed this woman for a (good) pass.

Ebert, who wasn't as divisive as Kael, also got enough flack for this that he occasionally spoke up about it. He was well-established enough that he could write what he wanted, though he probably enjoyed that much power because he was in line with the public most of the time.
-
Yeah, he definitely championed smaller and more daring films and sometimes panned popular ones. You're right that he wasn't as divisive as Kael but I do think he had his own point of view and was true to it.
