I didn't think about it (as a problem to be worked on) until very recently because I've just always been like this. It's exhausting!

Yeah, even having enough distance from those thought patterns in my own head to be able to recognize them as patterns, as an action that I was engaging in and had been engaging in forever, and not as simply "me," was a huge step!

+1 to this. 5 years into therapy I am better at 1) recognizing my habit of taking responsibility for other people's emotions 2) acknowledging that I don't need to do that, but I also don't have to feel bad for the impulse 3) mindfully letting go (or holding on)
