I'm curious to see how future games deal with that sort of thing. I think a lot of people are offput by the game when they think it's being pretentious by trying to indict them in a gameplay element they had no choice in. So the game would have to seperate player from character?

Gameplay as narrative is fascinating to me, it's why I love the medium so much.
