I absolutely loved this. It really is a "great and terrible game," as you said--scoring it felt so nonsensical to me. It's just something that is beautiful to parse, and also so, so miserable.

Oh gosh, thank you Kallie! I really appreciate that. Great job yourself engaging with all of its thorny contradictions.

Loved reading this. Def helped internalize my loose thoughts of why the brutality took so much away from the game even though the game works so hard to justify it.

Thank you so much.

Fantastic piece of writing. Personally I felt detached from Ellie when she left for Santa Barbara, and found the beach scene sickening and her ending unsympathetic, because for me Abby’s arc with Lev was the light in a story that was otherwise just very sad and senseless.

Great piece! I like how personal it was. I have to disagree with you about one issue you mentioned though. You seem frustrated with the game confronting you about Ellie's violence, and by extension your violence because it wasn't *your choice.*
-
But in the first game you play as both Joel and Ellie and you stab people's eyes out and torture them, but it's okay because you sympathize with their struggle.
