Yup. Joel had already murdered dozens needlessly even before the ending. There is no way I could play him other than as a multifaceted villain.

Are you referring to those he killed to find Ellie?

The reactions to the Joel reveal trailer broke my heart.

I mean I'd love to engage in that conversation, but no one has ever brought it up to me if I'm being frank. Wish someone did.

Joel is basically a moral key, handed on a silver platter, to people wanting to understand this world. Not to say his final decision is justified, but the morality and the emotions behind it is intrinsic to understanding a primary theme of the series. He sucks, but he's beautiful

One of my problems with the first game is that Joel is an obvious villain from beginning to end. There was no moral ambiguity to wrestle with. It's bizarre anyone could think he was a good guy. Dude was ambushing people once the apocalypse hit while his brother created a society.

I didn't wrestle with the moral ambiguity of Joel's actions. What Joel did was selfish. I did wrestle with how relatable it was. Anyone who says they wouldn't be incredibly conflicted about the death of a loved one for the greater good is lying to themselves.

People are trained to only see heroes or villains...

If Joel was a woman then it'd be like "She doomed humanity, selfish (slur)!, I hope the next game is only Ellie and they kill that (slur)".
