So many of us are so conditioned by predictably "satisfying" (but IMO not meaningfully satisfying at all), bland, risk-averse Marvel movies & whatnot that we think that's what art should strive to give us. It should be a given & a good thing that art might disappoint or upset us.

Personally, to be clear, I don't fault him for saying it. Rather, I think it's indicative of how broken and limited our whole conversation about games remains that he felt it needed to be said.

Like there's still that weird thing where the people who most vocally & defensively declare games "an art form" also want games to center their specific desires as if they're customers ordering art at a buffet. "Games are art and how dare you kill my favorite character?!" Huh???

Didn't they say this about the first game's ending, too? There's this odd suggestion with TLOU that possibly not liking it is just part of the design and thus you're not "getting" it. It feels like preempting the fact many may legitimately just not like your game.

I suspect there is some degree of genuine wariness of the "Warning GAMERS: This narrative may not meet your expectations if those expectations have been shaped by a steady diet of media that, well, caters to your expectations and strives to satisfy and comfort you" sort but IDK.
