Audiences that, rather than seeing value in a passionate array of perspectives, would take it as a personal affront to read thoughtful, incisive reviews arguing that Doom Eternal or GoW was terrible, even though great, stimulating reviews arguing that could certainly be written.

Part of the problem IMO is that we’ve confused fandom and criticism for too long. We’ve often wanted critics who are fundamentally uncritical because their primary role for us is often less to make us think critically about games than to make us feel good about liking games.

But real critics have personal ethics that also mean there are things they don’t like, and not just along the kinds of quasi-“objective” criteria that still dictates so much game criticism.

Anyway, here’s hoping the best games criticism is yet to come. I know it can be. It won’t be painless. It won’t be very commercial. It will require periods of alienating and infuriating large swaths of readers who think games crit is fine as it is. But we can get there.
