The first time I heard of it was 2001, the term FAQ was completely alien to me, and I went searching for GameFacts.

Yeah, this is actually why I still think there's a reasonable argument to be made for the spelling-it-out pronunciation, so as to avoid confusion with plausible-but-nonexistent sites GameFacts or GameFax (although I just discovered that gamefax redirects to GameFAQs!).
