I just watched a video review for the Turbo-Grafx 16 Mini in which the guy loved it but docked it points for its perceived limited "popular appeal." Who cares? A thing's "popular appeal" has nothing whatsoever to do with how good or not good it is.

Some of the best movies have very little popular appeal. Many terrible movies have huge popular appeal. If you think Doom Eternal deserves a 3 out of 10, give it a 3 out of 10. The fact that plenty of gamers are bound to love a thing should have no bearing whatsoever on your take

Appeals to some perceived standard of "objectivity" remain a terribly limiting force in lots of mainstream games criticism.

Recently I read a highly respected film critic's review panning Sorry We Missed You, a film most other critics love. His review was perceptive and fair and whether or not I agree with him, I'll get something out of having been exposed to his viewpoint when I see the film.

You just don't see that kind of deeply felt, intelligent breaking from consensus in mainstream games crit, the critics who give RDR2 a 3 or Doom Eternal a 2 or God of War a 4 because those games just don't work for them. Games crit could be so much more interesting than it is.

I'm not saying I think I'm the kind of critic that's missing. I definitely don't think I am. And I think these issues are systemic, not really about individuals.

Oh I didn't think you were saying you were. Just saying I liked reading your FF review for being more critique than product review type of thing.
