I like all the elements of gta in concept individually but the way they come together is just the worst

I always took that as part of the point of the story. It always felt aware of the toxic masculinity and awfulness. I guess that doesn't make someone want to spend more time in it though.
-
It's definitely aware. That doesn't make it effectively critical of those things. I mean, there are videos on YouTube of players deliberately enjoying harassing and killing trans NPCs in the game.

Haven't replayed V since '13 (loved it back then) but I can see what you mean. On the plus side, I think Rockstar* has gotten better with RDR2 in terms of non-male character portrayals. Sadie is terrific.

I played it up until the unskippable torture scene, then put it down and gave away the disc.

The world had some impressive detail but the characters are all so awful. I got a lot more enjoyment out of Sleeping Dogs and Watch Dogs 2, which scratched a similar itch without feeling as miserable

I remember when you initially stated this. Later when I played it for myself, I understood what you meant :/ it's a real shame. It's why I prefer the Red Dead games as a whole; far more human and less jaded in its world construction and atmosphere.

I've been playing Shenmue 3, a game I have issues with, but one that revolves around getting intimate with others and I feel like that has helped during this time. It's not a big budget game world that feels 'alive', but I felt more connected to it than 100s of hours in GTA.
-
Hmm, yeah, maybe now is the time for me to dig into that game. Thanks for mentioning it.
