I might call it "the return of randomizers". Nearly all the games I played as a kid had some kind of random mode, but at the turn of the century studios got obsessed with controllable experiences that could be polished perfectly.

Sure, but the term randomizer is useful when talking about...well...randomizers for games that aren’t initially designed as roguelikes or with randomized elements of that nature, a la Zelda 1, Link to the Past, Final Fantasy and so on.
