Yet so often I see other critics react to people criticizing popular films or filmmakers by saying, essentially, "Obviously this person doesn't like movies." I really don't get it.

Also, incidentally, this critic has liked certain films Ron Howard has made since. But she still is often critical of films that many other critics like. It's part of what makes her an essential voice on cinema.

Me saying "If you dislike Peter Gabriel, then clearly you just don't like music!" would be an easy way for me to assert that my own opinions are objectively good and true, that the artists I love are the right artists to love, and that anyone who doesn't share them is ignorant.
