If experiencing that mildly discordant moment of recognizing something as being a product of specific cultural constructions that are out of step with our current moment doesn't lead us to consider the influence of our present cultural constructions, then what are we even doing?

My sister and I grew up with my mom showing us old Hollywood films and trusting us to recognize the context of their age and that age does not devalue them. I always assumed others did the same. Then again, I assumed Cary Grant was still a remembered name :/

It strikes me as the same kind of bad joke that I see a lot of people use today: "I was stupid in my adolescence/20s, everyone's stupid in their adolescence/20s." Like, what does that say to everyone else? We should always dunk on people just trying to figure things out?
