To me, stuff like this is sort of the video game equivalent of an amazing matte painting in a classic film, or some incredible special effect from a film of the 1930s or 40s. Just thrilling to behold.

Sorry to seem dumb but can someone explain this to me? Is it because the steam is creating a nice illusion of depth because its coming from behind the building? Because if so, I agree.

It's a way of taking a prerendered background and giving it some movement, some activity that it wouldn't otherwise have. But yes, that too.

There's such beauty to how designers would get around hardware limitations to add atmosphere in older games. I'm still enamored by something as simple as the moving objects in Myst or Riven, even though I know that it's just a Quicktime video playing underneath an image.

The feelings about/evoked by Uematsu's music are also hopelessly entangled with the experience of the game.

Would have preferred an HD Remaster vs a Remake. Remake’s constant immediacy of narration from 1-main camera following Cloud around in 3rd person completely takes away from being swept away by the power of grandeur of the original by all the various perspectives & camera angles.
