I don't love the game--I think it takes an audacious game and turns it into a mostly conventional one--but I think it offers a fascinating lens through which to consider game design trends, why we loved FF7 so much in the first place, and what it is we actually value in games.

I know this might be cliche but I also want to acknowledge that FF7R lands a bit differently for me right now. Everywhere you go, people are living through trauma. There are newscasts about states of emergency being declared, people being told to stay home.

People talk about how hard it is to find work. A merchant in the slums boasted about getting in a shipment of fabric softener and I laughed not at the absurdity of it but the relevance. And one moment of grief in the game offered a welcome reflection of grief I was experiencing.

Just for fun, one of my fave little details in the original that of course wouldn’t fit in Remake: this neon sign in the bar for TEXAS. Just, like, the concept or the feeling of Texas, I guess. I love stuff like this so much. Whatever we gain in the remake, we lose something, toopic.twitter.com/tPxA3hidc1

I also wrote this short reflection on the urgency of Final Fantasy 7's themes and how they're harder to ignore than ever before.https://www.polygon.com/2020/4/6/21210038/final-fantasy-7-remake-ecological-warning-playstation-4 …

Anyway it's true of lots of games but I think it's especially true of FF7R that the discussion won't even really take off until it's been out for a bit, players respond to it, & we can talk more fully & deeply about its choices, its (IMO) reliance on familiarity & nostalgia, etc.

Really pleased to hear the cross-dressing scene is done more respectfully, that's the one part that bugs me more every time I've replayed the original...

Great read, and you raise fascinating points. As I finished reading I clicked your name to read more only to find out this is your first for Polygon. Excited to read more in future!
