I'm somewhat suspicious of the FF7 remake, in the same way that I dislike the RE2 remake and am suspicious of the RE3 remake. They seem to leave no room for the argument that maybe there's actually value and virtue in the "awkward" things they seek to erase and smooth over.

Agreed. Though unlike RE2 & RE3, FF7 Remake seems to be taking a fairly distinct turn from the original; they're less directly comparable as "improved". Early story signs also give me hope there's more to the "Remake" in it, as being remade in an image is central to FF7's plot.

RE2 feels like it's made to replace the original RE2 as the "definitive" way to play. But FF7 Remake has such a core difference in gameplay, game structure, and story, it seems more like a reimagining. The Cloud to FF7's Zack perhaps.

I hope so. I just think so many gamers put such a premium on graphics and often describe the original FF7 as “hard to go back to” because of how it looks that I feel like arguments in defense of the idea that how it looks is actually good need to be made.

I absolutely agree, and that's part of why I'm glad this doesn't appear to be a full "remake". It changes everything to an extent that makes it not even directly compete with the original in graphics or gameplay. And if they lean into that aspect, it'd even fit some core themes.

I love the original FF7 and cherish its "wonkiness". The character models, writing, and even writing fit a mood and flow that is a distinct experience. It should be allowed to exist as it is.

I'm still holding some hope that signs of story and structure differences mean we could get a good, surprising outcome. Just as Cloud starts by trying to recreate someone's grand "legacy" and slowly unravels to accept they can be their own person, this could become its own game.

It could indeed be pretty exciting if the remake seems to have these sorts of ideas at play.

I'm trying to be analytical but also shit that'd be cool. Heh. Even if the rest of the game turned out meh, I'd respect the heck out of it. *looks at the devs* Please lean into the "Remake" part, confirming a total "remake" of a classic could never truly replace the original.
