I'm somewhat suspicious of the FF7 remake, in the same way that I dislike the RE2 remake and am suspicious of the RE3 remake. They seem to leave no room for the argument that maybe there's actually value and virtue in the "awkward" things they seek to erase and smooth over.

That's not to say that I don't think the FF7 might end up being great or end up offering wonderful new things of its own. It's just to say that I actually think there's meaning and beauty and value in the way the original FF7 so visibly deals with the constraints of its time.

Agreed. Though unlike RE2 & RE3, FF7 Remake seems to be taking a fairly distinct turn from the original; they're less directly comparable as "improved". Early story signs also give me hope there's more to the "Remake" in it, as being remade in an image is central to FF7's plot.

RE2 feels like it's made to replace the original RE2 as the "definitive" way to play. But FF7 Remake has such a core difference in gameplay, game structure, and story, it seems more like a reimagining. The Cloud to FF7's Zack perhaps.

I feel like I touched on a similar feeling in my impressions a month or so backhttps://www.usgamer.net/articles/final-fantasy-7-remake-preview-february-2020 …

You lose the impact of big moments without the quiet ones. For this reason I vastly prefer Alien's and Godfather's pacing to most modern films. Nice and insightful piece. =)

Oh, I totally agree but I haven’t been able to articulate it like this 🙂 I told someone I love how the original is like reading an illustrated story book, and your mind makes up the rest of the picture. I miss that in games...

Yeah! Having grown up with Atari as my earliest games I still love it when games in one way or another leave gaps that our imagination has to fill.

I have more faith in the RE3Remake than I do with RE2Remake. It’s a good game, but peaked to early for me... RE3Remake feels it gonna be the better game of the 2. I was really sold on the demo with the implementation of Nemesis and completely revamped dodge mechanics.

The existence of FF7R has also seemed to get everyone wanting needless remakes of every classic game. It's heartbreaking. Final Fantasy VI needs no remake. It's a great game as is. It just needs to be accessible to modern audiences in a way that reflects the original.

I think there’s a really interesting point there about the way that games always feel like they are the best they could be, and that a lot of people have a kind of shallow relationship with the history of games.
