An update on this bizarre story: Pat North, a Cincinnati woman who is under criminal investigation for stealing antique musical instruments, stole two from my wife. This was under the guise of refurbishing and reselling them on commission.https://local12.com/news/local/more-customers-come-forward-with-complaints-about-cincinnati-fluteworks …

Last year my wife took an antique flute and Piccolo to Pat North that were valued at $24,000 together. We subsequently discovered that she pawned them, along with seemingly every other antique instrument she took under false pretenses from other people.

These were among the most valuable possessions in the family, and their sale was intended to help cushion any out-of-pocket costs related to Nancy‘s cancer treatment, as well as possibly helping the kids a little bit with college. Now that’s apparently all gone.

A detective said he found one of the instruments, the flute, in a Kentucky pawnshop, where she had sold it for $4000, less than 40% of its market value. I’m going to talk to the owner today and see if we can buy it back for less, because it was stolen, but the odds are not good.

Detective said that there are much stricter rules in Ohio regarding pawnshops buying goods that are later revealed as stolen – apparently in Kentucky there’s not a lot you can do to get stolen stuff back.

This is a financial gut punch comparable to my discovery that my mother and stepfather spent the money I had been saving for college since childhood. I know lots of people have it worse but still, wow, I don’t even know how to process this.

The most mysterious thing about the case is, the detective says he has no idea where the money is. I guess it’s not in any bank accounts, and considering that she bilked people out of probably hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years, where did it all go? Drugs? Gambling?

I guess we have to just consider this a different kind of “natural disaster“ like having a lightning strike set your house on fire or something. Or, I suppose, like the tornado that destroyed half of my father’s house a couple of months ago. What a year.

Update: the detective, who was absolutely relentless in prosecuting this case, got the instrument thief into court on larceny charges and has begun returning a lot of the stolen instruments, including Nancy‘s flute (pictured).pic.twitter.com/de9qJpQCEk
