Also, any "problematic" moments in a movie like Touch of Evil don't so much have the effect of making me feel like "Wow we've come so far since then!" as they make me more clearly see the ways those same elements of racism, sexism etc. have morphed but still exist in modern films

Have you seen the 1949 noir-thriller "Border Incident"? Ricardo Montalban as a PJF agent tasked with infiltrating a group that smuggles migrant workers across the border. Probably one of the few american movies of the era where a mexican gets to play a heroic mexican.
