The other day a woman commented to me out of the blue that I looked like her cousin, and told me his name. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with this information, so I just nodded and said, "Oh." Then she said abruptly, "I'm not saying you look like a man!"

For me, the experience of being a visibly trans person is one of always being reminded that people don't really see me when they look at me, and always being on guard against the next reminder.

I have an interview in a few days for a job in a retail position and I really need a job so I guess I hope I get it but I'm also anxious: will they want to hire a visibly trans person? Do I have the emotional stamina to face customers all day now that I am a visibly trans person?
