I know it’s silly sometimes the things that bum me out but today I saw someone say the stop motion effects in Robocop “don’t hold up well” and like can’t you have a sense of wonder for what they accomplished then (and how) rather than judging everything against modern CGI?

I was once told an audience doesn't care what it took to get the movie made, just the end result, and these effects might not do it for some people, the aesthetic changes. Heck I know people that don't like the colour palette of older films, cuz they look so different /1

to what they're used to, and films will become dated and it's sad for us who enjoy those movies and wonder why the next generation dont, samething our parents went through to and the next generation will go through to. On the flip side I find it sad when older fans write off /2

CGI effects as being lesser because the work is all digital, as if that means no work has gone into some of the amazing effects that happen today, and how we can see stuff brought to life that could never have happened this way without the technology changing. /3

TLDR Fan of both types of effects, but also feel films can become dated and that modern fans can appreciate what it took to make those while still not liking them, because aesthetics change. /4

Fair enough. Whenever someone tells me that they just can’t watch or enjoy b&w films (for instance), to me that sounds like a serious limitation in one’s taste that cuts you off from tons of wonderful and valuable art,...

... and it’s hard for me not to hear it as a kind of arrogant belief that it’s only in the modern era that we’ve figured out how to make anything good or worthwhile. But it’s their life.

What I object to more than anyone’s lack of interest in older stuff is the collective arrogance with which it’s sometimes viewed. Like when theaters show classic films & ppl go to watch them thru a lens of cultural superiority, laughing ironically at how “silly” things used to be

I agree mostly with you. I think there's a lot of older movies that stand the test of time really well despite looking "dated" Robocop, Aliens, Psycho etc, but also I see films that have aged poorly due to limitations of the time, /1

For me. Connery Bond movies and Burtons Batman. Don't work and later installments show a progression in film techniques, stunts, acting styles and effects. So I also get seeing something and thinking "wow we've come a long way" The subjective nature of art I guess. /2
