I know this convo is getting long in the tooth by internet standards (and I’m certainly extremely tired of it) but I want to say one more thing about, the intense negative reaction that sometimes happens to critiquing things on the basis of gender representation.

Some argue that it’s reductive to criticize something like Baby Yoda’s Adventures on the basis of gender representation, as if those of us who do so are saying “There really aren’t enough women here and therefore the show is BAD.” But it’s not like that. It’s one lens among many.

I think Skyfall is DEEPLY regressive and reactionary in its gender politics, and that it’s a staggering example of cinematic mythmaking. I think Death Stranding is pretty bad about gender and it’s probably my game of the year.

As a woman and a queer person and a trans person, I learned a long time ago how to enjoy and appreciate films, games, etc. that hate or are just thoroughly indifferent to people like me. If I hadn’t done so, well, at one point, that really wouldn’t have left me with much.
