I know this convo is getting long in the tooth by internet standards (and I’m certainly extremely tired of it) but I want to say one more thing about, the intense negative reaction that sometimes happens to critiquing things on the basis of gender representation.

I think Skyfall is DEEPLY regressive and reactionary in its gender politics, and that it’s a staggering example of cinematic mythmaking. I think Death Stranding is pretty bad about gender and it’s probably my game of the year.

As a woman and a queer person and a trans person, I learned a long time ago how to enjoy and appreciate films, games, etc. that hate or are just thoroughly indifferent to people like me. If I hadn’t done so, well, at one point, that really wouldn’t have left me with much.

I’m really enjoying The Mandalorian at the lot yet at the same time it does stick out that almost the entire cast is male and I can’t see any reason for it. I like his shit but John Favreau actually has a bit of form, he only casts women as certain types of characters.

I’d argue that he’d cop a bit more heat for it if he was a bigger & more visible creative (I know he acts in a lot of his movies but I reckon people would struggle to rattle of his writing/directing filmography in a way they don’t with say JJ Abrams).
