Probably helps that I fancy myself a writer and that I could relate to a lot of the father issues in the film but as a Mr. Rogers episode for adults, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood sure worked for me.

The one point when I almost felt as if Tom Hanks’ Rogers was talking to me was when he tells Lloyd (Matthew Rhys) that for all his failures and mistakes, his father taught him important things that made him who he is. Yeeeeeah. Yeah.

To me the fascinating puzzle of the film, and of Rogers as he exists as a figure in our collective cultural memory, is that he was given to saying things like this, and yet to us, he himself seems to exist at something of a remove, a bit inscrutable, a bit unknowable.pic.twitter.com/Tls4ldV1nX

Also Marielle Heller’s directing is great. It’s admittedly a pretty sentimental story but she keeps those tendencies in check, keeps things feeling grounded and honest.
