To be clear, the best critics in any medium, like, say, Pauline Kael and Manohla Dargis in cinema, write uncompromisingly from their own, unique perspective. It is that perspective that makes their work valuable.

I mean, the real question is who is this monolithic "audience" that video game critics are ostensibly supposed to write their reviews for? What are their tastes? Are the people who might be inclined to really love DS just not "real enough gamers" to be considered or something?

Look, I think we can all be reasonable and acknowledge that REAL game criticism means liking the things I like and hating the things I hate, and reassuring me I'm objectively correct for doing so. Anything else is agenda-driven propaganda.
