Consider pairing Pain and Glory with End of the Century, another great film from this year about a gay man who has a poignant reunion with a past lover. Both films are set in Spain and both feel (vaguely or explicitly) haunted by the lives the men they’re about didn’t lead.

Pain and Glory is one of those films that maybe you don't realize quite how affecting it is when you're watching it, but then, after that revelatory final shot and as you live with the memory of the film, you realize that it contained so much life. Just brimming over with life.

Having deeply identified with Rey's loneliness throughout the new trilogy, I hoped The Rise of Skywalker's ending would give me the kind of energy I want to carry into 2020. But that ending felt like a betrayal. So I'll carry the energy from the last shot of Pain & Glory instead.
