“Even with its vaguely anti-capitalist sci-fi dressing, The Outer Worlds is more of a familiar comfort than a daring revelation. Maybe that’s okay.” And although I haven’t played it yet and am eager to do so, IMO maybe it’s okay to think that’s not okay, too.https://twitter.com/austin_walker/status/1186746096132997120 …

Hey, @RobZacny is going to drop his review of The Outer Worlds later this week, but for now, here's a bunch of words on why I'm warm on (but not quite enamored with) it: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/bjwbx8/the-outer-worlds-isnt-revolutionary-its-a-warm-blanket …

Maybe it’s okay (maybe it’s not okay). Maybes are dangerous... or maybe not?

What if there were games that were set in socialist worlds? Imagine being able to learn what that would look like by playing through it. Maybe it wouldn’t be so abstract? This is why games have so much artistic potential, the power to immerse an audience into any world.

So just enough questioning to raise doubts and then follow it up with “but it’s really not that bad, enjoy your Marvel movie and don’t think too hard?” I wonder more and more how strident criticism has to be in order to not reinforce the system under critique as a safety valve.
