This is a great post, and a great thread! I'd love to hear you talk about this aspect of bots: part of why they're less fun is that we get to engage in dominating/being superior to another human being (kind of a toxic joy) a lot less (1/2)

(2/2) Some kinds of games, I notice, are totally fun against bots (usually highly systemic games like eurogames or Civ type stuff) whereas stuff like fighting games and shooters are hurt very badly when played against bots. Is it because the latter rely a lot more on domination?

I see what yr getting at but it's hard for me to come at it from that angle because Fortnite is never an experience of domination for me. I normally get destroyed. And I greatly prefer the heat of getting destroyed by other players to the eerie, hollow interactions I have w/bots.

But I do agree in broad strokes with what you're saying, that bots can work pretty well in some types of games, and less well in others, depending on the type of gameplay and the nature of the interactions those games typically provide. It's worth exploring for sure.
