love being subjected to the conversation "Scorsese thinks the bad people in his movies are actually cool & good" every time Scorsese makes a new film, or even when he doesn't. absolutely love 2 constantly relitigate this.

Agreed. And I think not enough of the convo is about those root causes, it seems to be a lot of people just going “thing bad” which is unhelpful. IMO a lot of the misreadings and misinterpretation (on many fronts) comes from lack of vocabulary/critical thought.

I don’t think there was some time when general audiences were more savvy fwiw. In my cynical moments I feel like blockbusters have come down the level of audiences rather than raising the bar. And we get a situation where new audiences look back and go “thing bad” uncritically

well, I was talking very specifically about shit like this - a person whose bad reading has nothing to do with being predisposed to loving violence or misogyny. she's not saying, "I'm worried other people misunderstand this movie" - she misunderstands ithttps://twitter.com/faceyouhate/status/1181664830819897345 …

I don't know. I guess I just think that...if we're worried about people misinterpreting Scorsese and glorifying gangsters, it's definitely not helpful when folks who should know better willfully misread his intent & agree with creeps who think he's celebrating violence & misogyny

I've been in a lot of fandom circles and it doesn't matter how clearly you make it that someone is pure evil, fans will idolize them anyway. The ability to misunderstand media knows no bounds for many. There's only so much artists can or should be expected to do to address that.
