love being subjected to the conversation "Scorsese thinks the bad people in his movies are actually cool & good" every time Scorsese makes a new film, or even when he doesn't. absolutely love 2 constantly relitigate this.

There is always the possibility an audience will misinterpret a film, which should cause reflection on a creators part, but is it useful to give credence to that misinterpretation? It’s worth examining the misinterpretation happened, but shouldn’t we also point out its wrongness?
-
Yes, we absolutely should point out its wrongness. I just don't think we should deny that such cultural impact takes place, however much it may be rooted in "bad readings" by audience members predisposed to loving violence or misogyny or whatever the case may be.

I've seen that said a lot with the whole Joker debate but I have to ask what responsibility people saying it think artists have? I don't disagree that art impacts the world but surely we don't expect Scorsese to not make his films because morons might take the wrong message?

It’s not Scorsese’s fault that hammerhead dudes fall asleep halfway through his crime pictures and never see the protagonists therein get thrust into an unholy abyss that makes the back third of a life of crime look like a fucking nightmarescape.
-
I agree, not his fault. And yet I think an unfortunate reality that comes w/living in a society that normalizes patriarchy, toxic masculinity, misogyny, and so on to such a degree, is that what read to some of us as obvious critiques reads to others as "just the way things are."

I'm not advocating for art that overtly moralizes. Just for room to acknowledge in our conversations & critiques that we live in a culture that already loves male violence and domination and so sometimes art, even great art, inadvertently helps to maintain a fucked up status quo.
