I once again feel like people talking about art in and of itself and people talking about the cultural impact of art (both valid, worthwhile conversations) are talking past each other. Yes, taken on its own terms, Goodfellas can be seen as a “critique” of the things it depicts.

Scarface is probably an even more blatant one. Yes, you can see it as a parable of how drugs and obsessive ambition destroy his life and everything he cares for, but then you just have all the fanbros shouting "Haha! Say hello to my leetle friend! The world is yours! Awesome!"

And of course the game even has him killing all his enemies at the film's end, and going on to basically become the Badass King of All Crime.

I think a lot of this stuff (especially post south park, which really perfected it) is intentionally crafted to force that argument. You have depiction *cool* enough that people that are into it will be excited, criticism subtle enough you can ignore it if you don't want...

...to see it, and if that *is* what you are looking for you get to feel clever for noticing it. On top of that at least one aspect is tuned in a way to rankle a group that is known to react to things. Makes for a perfect blend of attention and deniability :\

The existence of idiots should not be used as a de facto limit on artistic expression.
