The filmmaking in JOKER is fine IMO, but unremarkable. It clearly wants to evoke early Scorsese but without the alarming grit that made those films genuinely unnerving and uncomfortable. A clinical, soulless imitation, like Abrams imitating early Spielberg in Super 8.

Also, I think JOKER would make for a fascinating double feature when paired with You Were Never Really Here, which I consider a MUCH better film but it’s also one JOKER echoes in a number of interesting ways.

I keep trying to grapple with who did 'society' better Scorsese, or this. I haven't seen it, but from what I gather it sounds incredibly unwieldy. Yes, while a movie like Taxi Driver could be compared, the fact is that Travis Bickle had some weird positive moral compass.
