100% agree. If White was supposed to be a true villain and we were supposed to hate him, then Breaking Bad is among the most egregious misses in television history.

Super strongly agree. It's like satire - you gotta be very careful with this kind of anti-hero stuff, and almost no one ever is.

The show portrayed WW as a heartless murderer, a liar who did not care about anyone. The “motivation” was even taken from him in S3 when he went into recession. I agree some movies ask for sympathy with their anti hero but BB never asked us to feel bad for him.

The imagery and the framing constantly glorified Heisenberg as badass. How else do you explain the fact that tons of viewers rooted for him, hated his wife (and the actor who player her), bought T-shirts with Heisenberg's image on them, etc.?

Second to last episode of the last season shows the lives of people close to him in ruins because of his actions. How is that the show asking people to cheer for him? I think judging a piece of art or entertainment mainly based on its fans is a mistake.

There's so much more to how a piece of media shapes our perceptions than just the specifics of the plot. Cinematography, music, the generation of suspense, the framing of action sequences, and so on all have a huge impact on how we absorb what we're seeing.

Have you seen Joker yet?
-
No, but to be clear, this is a reaction to a piece written by someone who has seen it, and anyway I'm not responding to their comments on Joker, I'm responding to their comments on Breaking Bad.

The thing about the Joker, in my opinion, is that I feel people miss is that you’re never supposed to empathize with him; you meant to pity him. The difference with Walter White is he came from a situation you empathize with, and THEN he goes down the path of darkness.

Are people trying to pretend that Walter White wasn’t likeable (or at least supposed to be liked, as a matter of perspective)?
