I'm not sure what to make of the cancel culture conversation because I'm not sure we're all operating from the same understanding of what cancel culture even means. I mean, obviously some statements, some comedy specials, some films, etc. need to be strenuously criticized, right?

But I also think a lot of blatantly misogynistic or racist or otherwise hateful art gets a pass for appearing "sophisticated," "complex," "realistic," whatever, when it's really just regurgitating the same status quo garbage we've been seeing for decades.

I get frustrated with critics who boil art down to just a collection of messages & values & leave no room to engage with aesthetic beauty, tone, structure, etc. I also get frustrated with critics who ignore the ideological values of works because hey, the cinematography is great.
