I'm not sure what to make of the cancel culture conversation because I'm not sure we're all operating from the same understanding of what cancel culture even means. I mean, obviously some statements, some comedy specials, some films, etc. need to be strenuously criticized, right?

I don't really think there are many people out there who genuinely want art to be simplistic, always easily digestible, always "nice," but to whatever extent that "cancel culture" genuinely stands in opposition to art simply being challenging and complex, of course that's bad.

But I also think a lot of blatantly misogynistic or racist or otherwise hateful art gets a pass for appearing "sophisticated," "complex," "realistic," whatever, when it's really just regurgitating the same status quo garbage we've been seeing for decades.

Huh. Turns out these things are complicated, huh folks?

I get frustrated with critics who boil art down to just a collection of messages & values & leave no room to engage with aesthetic beauty, tone, structure, etc. I also get frustrated with critics who ignore the ideological values of works because hey, the cinematography is great.
